Electronic Project Description
[edit] Background
A CNC router is a computer numerical controlled router that can be used to cut out three dimensional designs. The user creates a three dimensional object in a standard CAD file format. They then run a program that will send commands to the CNC router that instructs it to begin cutting out the object. Different materials can be routed from foam to harder wood.
[edit] Problem Statement
An entry level CNC router can cost thousands of dollars. We will work to design and build a less expensive CNC router and then make the plans and software available to the public.

[edit] Goal
To create an affordable CNC router that has a public design and open source software.
[edit] Sub-goals
- Develop a software program to communicate with and control the CNC router.
- Develop and build a CNC router.
- Integrate a vacuum system to remove dust and debris.
- Include safety parameters to stop the machine if an unexpected obstacle enters the cutting field.
- Develop a bit cooling system for machining metals.
- Develop a method and apparatus for scanning parts placed on the CNC platform.
- Explore the possibility of being able to swap tool heads to extend the functionality of the router. For example, a plotter head or cutting laser.
[edit] Helpful Skill
- Experience with electronics and embedded software.
- Experience with software design and development.
- Circuit design.
- Mechanical aptitude.
